What are the password rules?

Password must be at least eight characters long.

Password is case sensitive. (If the password has capital and lower case letters,
you must type it using the capital and lower case letters.)

How do I login/register?

You'll be prompted to login or register when you go to the checkout screen from
your basket.

To register enter your email address and other required information and enter a password that meets the requirements.

If you are already registered, you can login by entering your email address and password.

How do I change my password?

You can change your password in the "My Account" section of the Store. Click on the "My Account" link in the upper left corner. Enter your existing password, and then enter your new password twice for confirmation (password must be eight characters long.) Then click on the "Save" button. You see a message that it was successfully saved.

Why do I get timed out by the Store?

The Store is set to time out after thirty (30) minutes of idle time. This is to protect you, and prevent someone from ordering under your account. We recommend that you save your shopping basket frequently. If the Store times out, a message will appear that your session has expired due to inactivity, and you can click on the link to log back into the store.

What if I see only the left menu and a blank page when I go to the Map Locator and Downloader?

You need to set your browser to accept cookies. It's an easy change to make, and instructions below should help.

 

If you are concerned about security and/or privacy issues, Wikipedia has good information, as does the Help text in most browsers.

 

Instructions for Windows system browsers:

Internet Explorer (version 7) -
Click on TOOLS, then click on INTERNET OPTIONS, and on the SECURITY tab set the "Security Level" to Medium-High or to Medium. (For more information click on Internet Explorer's HELP and enter "Privacy Settings" in the Help Search box, and click on "Change Your Privacy Settings.")

 

Firefox (version 1.5; Mozilla 5.0) -
Click on TOOLS, then click on OPTIONS, and click on the PRIVACY tab, and on the COOKIES tab click the box to "Allow sites to set cookies." (For more information click on Firefox's HELP and click on "Managing Cookies.")

 

Instructions for Apple system browsers:

 

Safari (version 3.1) -
Click on SAFARI, then click on PREFERENCES, and on the SECURITY tab click on the button to ACCEPT COOKIES "Always." (For more information go to the Safari HELP menu and search for "Managing Cookies.")

 

Firefox (version 2.0; Mozilla 5.0) -
Click on FIREFOX, then click on PREFERENCES, and on the PRIVACY tab, under COOKIES click on both buttons to "Accept cookies from sites" and "Accept third-party cookies". (For more information go to the Firefox HELP menu and click on "Managing Cookies.")

 

REMEMBER - After you are done with the Map Locator you may want to change your cookie settings back to the previous setting.

How do I find a product I want?

Quick Search: Using the Search box in the Store you can enter a product number or word from the title or any USGS product. In cases where a product is out of print or not for sale, but we may still have product information in our system, you can check the USGS Library, or local map dealers for obtaining the product.

Advanced Search: Using the Advanced Search function in the Store, you can enter one or more kinds of information.

    Search is not case sensitive.

    Use the *asterisk* as a wildcard before and after your keyword(s) to optimize the search

    Enter a search criteria in one or more field

    Use a combination of fields to enhance your search, for example:

    Name: Geologic  |  State: ME
    Results: Products for the state of Maine with geologic in the short title

Map Locator: Using the Map Locator you can find topographic maps by searching on a zip code, place name, or the map name.

Browse: You can also browse in the various lists of products in the catalog by clicking on product types in the left navigation bar or choices on the page.

If you are still having difficulty locating a product, you can search more extensive citations in the Publications Warehouse, National Geologic Map Database, or the Geographic Names Information System.

In cases where a product is out of print or not for sale, but we may still have product information in our system, you can check the USGS Library, or local map dealers for obtaining the product.

How do I use the Shopping Basket features?

You can put an item into your basket by clicking on the shopping basket icon Shopping basket Icon within a product listing page or product details page. within a product listing page or product details page.

Click on the "My Basket:" link on the top navigation bar to go to your shopping basket.

Items can also be directly put into the shopping basket by entering the product number (52680 or THI0003) and quantity. In the Shopping Basket screen you will see the list of items you have selected. Here you can change quantities, remove items, continue shopping, save the shopping basket for future use, or Proceed to checkout. You will be prompted to register or login using an existing email address and password.

What shipping methods can I choose?

The order will ship via regular ground service, which takes about 3-5 business days at no extra charge.

You can choose to pay for expedited service by selecting FedEx Overnight or FedEx 2nd day service. These expedited shipping costs will be charged to your account.

"Will Call" may only be used by our Business Partners, who can choose to pick up the order in person at our location in Denver.

How do I checkout?

When you have verified your order within your shopping basket screen, you are ready to click on the "Go To Checkout" button. Your Billing address and shipping address are displayed.

Default Ship-to Address: Displays the delivery address. This address can be changed by selecting the link to change it. Complete the form and click on the Save Button to use the different address in your order.

Payment with Credit Card: Select the card company, enter the card holder, card number, and expiration date.

Delivery Type: To change the default shipping method which is FEDEX Ground or U.S. Postal Service, select from the dropdown list. If FEDEX Overnight or FEDEX 2nd Day is selected the actual shipping costs will be charged when the package is shipped.

You can click on the "Proceed with Check out" button to proceed. The following screen displays a summary of your order. To proceed with the order, click on the "Submit Order" button.

What payment options are there?

Credit card is the primary payment option.

For credit card payments select the card company, enter the card holder, card number, and expiration date.

What if I do not want to use my credit card on the internet to place my order?

You can print out an order form and mail payment in the form of a check to our office to place your order. Please note that when you provide a check as payment, you authorize us to either use the information from your check to make a one-time electronic fund transfer from your account or to process the payment as a check transaction. When we use the information from your check to make an electronic funds transfer, funds may be withdrawn from your account as soon as the same day we receive your payment, and you will not receive your check back from your financial institution.

How do I submit my order?

You may click on the Submit Order button. The system will respond with your order number.

Please print the screen for your records.

How do I track an order?

You can check the status of your order by clicking on the "My Account" link at the top of the page. There you will be prompted to login using your email address and password.

Open Orders - These orders have not yet been processed on our warehouse floor.

Completed Orders - These orders have been processed in our warehouse and have been shipped out. You can select the order to see more detail. On the detailed screen you can see the carrier type and click on the tracking number to track the shipment from that carrier's website.

Saved Shopping Baskets - If you have saved a shopping basket while shopping in the store, they will be displayed here. You can also deleted your saved shopping baskets by clicking on the trash can icon. Trash can icon

Personal Data - You can modify your Account information on this screen including your; address, phone numbers and email address. If you choose to change your email address, this new email address will need to used when you login to the site after you save the change. Simply click on the Save button after your changes have been entered.

Change Password - You can change your password on this screen and view the "password rules" link. Enter your existing password, and your new password twice for confirmation (password must be eight characters long.) Then click on the "Save" button. You see a message that it was successfully saved.

To view a detailed version of a product that is a PDF file, you will need to
download Adobe Reader.

Where can I get a blank order form to fax or mail in my order?

You can print out an order form and mail payment in the form of a check to our office to place your order. You can also fax your order using a credit card as the payment method on the form or request to be contacted by a customer service representative.
